Valentines Banner and Cards, 100th Day and More!

Who doesn't love having a few snow days in January to get something accomplished that equates to sharing some freebie 💗love💗 with other librarian friends?

I needed a little something to go over a book display for Valentine's Day, so I created this 'Love to Read' banner

Lots of schools are gearing up for their 100th Day of School Celebrations, so I thought this book number writing activity would be fun for kindergarten and first grade to complete in the library or for sharing with classroom teachers.

I previously created some Christmas cards that lots of people used for centers/stations, gifts for nursing home residents, and for students' families, so I thought a set of Valentine's Day cards would be fun, too.

I'm a second-year member of the Missouri Association of School Librarians  (MASL) Curriculum Committee (formerly Lesson Plan Database Task Force) which allows me to curate and create free lesson plans for librarians for the MASL Lesson Plan Database. Be sure to check out some of my latest additions for The Library Fish by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Dot. Unplugged by Randi Zuckerberg. You could use these for regular library lessons or they would also be great as substitute plans.

Puppy Love Numbers 1-31 {Freebie}

It's not too early to start planning for February is it? Especially since I've already been adding stuff for March. :) The sad thing is, I don't even have my lesson plans done for January. Is there something wrong with this picture? Ha!

I wanted to share a simple freebie with you that I created tonight. Click on the pictures below to head over to my Teachers Notebook shop to download the file for free. I hope you like it!

Number Recognition Printables 1-30

Just thought I would share some printables for numbers 0-30. I was looking for something that incorporated a little more than just writing numbers and showing one type of value. I know they are very basic, but I am going to use them with some of my HeidiSongs printables like the number songs, number cards,  as well as, our number poems for each number in order to create a packet for each number. Plus, my students can use information from our anchor charts to fill in some of the worksheets. This will help them be a little more accountable when the chart is being created. Numbers 1-10 are all the same format. The numbers 11-30 have a few different elements to help with base ten, greater than/less than, counting from a given number, etc.

Click here or on the pictures below to download these from my TpT store for only $2.

Does anyone have a zero number poem?

We have number poems for 1-10, but I would love to have one for zero to put on an anchor chart. Does anyone have a good number zero poem you'd like to share?

Ice Cream Math and More Dollar Tree Finds!

Today, I had to go back into town to get brush killer and a pump to try to kill the insane amount of poison ivy we have climbing several of the barbed wire fences around our yard. I am highly allergic and have had it three times this spring/summer already. I’m so tired of scratching that I was ready to spend whatever it took to have it all gone!
So, I took advantage of the trip to run by a different Dollar Tree this afternoon. I'm most excited about the ice cream bowls! :) My thought was to make these into another math work station. I would add number cards and have students spoon ice cream (pom poms) into their ice cream bowls. I would also include some recording sheets with ten frames and paint markers. I will try to make that later as a freebie in case any of you get these, too.
Dollar Tree: $9
  • 2 sets of ice cream bowls (3/set—1 each of pink, green and blue)
  • 2 sets of pom poms (80 pcs/set)
  • 1 Cars foam number puzzle
  • 1 Disney Princesses foam number puzzle
  • 2 sets of divided plastic dishes (2/pack)
  • 1 pkg. of flamingo drink stirrers (10/pack)

I bought the divided plates for addition and subtraction. The drink stirrers go with the palm trees I got last night for use as individual pointers during Guided Reading, The Daily 5—Read to Self/Someone, etc. The foam number puzzles will be for putting numbers in order and then I’m already working on a recording sheet for 10-20.

Now, where do I put all of this until school starts?

Math on my mind!

I have really enjoyed visiting other blogs and I'm in awe of all the ideas, activities and printables that I will be able to add to our math time next year. However, I haven't been able to get math off my mind the last few days. So, this is what I'm doing.

Currently reading Math in Motion...Wiggle, Gallop, and Leap with Numbers! I love the math obstacle course! The book is available as an e-book download at Creative Teaching Press for $12.99.

Playing 1-2-3 Stomp with my 4 year-old daughter! We bought it on Amazon a few years ago around Christmas time for 9.99. So much fun and great for number recognition.
Also reading Developing Number Concepts Using Unifix Cubes. It is an older book, but it has lots of great ideas.

I'm also trying to get HeidiSongs Number 17 song out of my head. :) I LOVE it! Can you tell what we've been watching at our house? Head over to Heidi's web site to download her free Jumpin' Numbers 0-30 presentation handout for lots of goodies. Actually, the whole page has fabulous downloads.

I dare you to try not to sing along! :)

Teacher Inspired Math Work Stations Ideas and Activities for Chapters 1-5

While I’m waiting to get my Math Work Stations book, I am working on compiling lists of blog posts that have lots of great ideas for Kindergarten Work Stations. I have gone through lots and lots of links, but I’m only posting those I found to be the most beneficial and most easily adaptable for Kindergarten. I hope you’ll find something useful, too!

***If you don't see a link on here that you think would be beneficial, please leave a comment and let me know!***

Numbers in the teens

Thanks to Kindergarten Tales for sharing this video! I can't wait to use it next year with my Kinder kiddos. I would love to have 100% mastery of the teen numbers and I'm willing to try just about anything to make it happen. :)

Gingerbread Men Number Flip Book 1-20

I just updated the seasonal flip book to include gingerbread men. Our kids are expected to be at 31 by this time of year. I stopped the book at 20 though because it's mainly just a reinforcement for the kiddos who need extra practice.

Those pesky numbers 11-20!!!

Every year, it's the same thing. The numbers 11-19 just don't fit the same rhythmic pattern that the numbers before and after seem to fit. I just finished testing number recognition (numbers in isolation) from 0-20 and the majority of the kids that were struggling weren't able to get 11-19. The most common mistake is calling the numbers with 'ty' at the end. For example, 12 is twenty, 13 is thirty, 14 is forty, etc.

Last year, I attended a math workshop in which the presenter was more than willing to seek out resources to help us meet our grade level expectations in any area we needed a little assistance. She sent me the following book and I sooo wish I would have remembered before I started teaching numbers 11-19. Now that I know exactly who is struggling, which happens to be 8 of my 22 students, I'm going to work with them in a small group to make sure they get these numbers memorized. Hopefully this book will help.

Here's a link to the mini books I'm going to use. There is a 7-day free trial.

We are also using HeidiSongs Jumpin' Numbers 11-30 DVD this year. We adore the number 17 Chicken Dance Song. :)

Do you have any fabulous ideas for teaching 11-19?

Play Doh Numbers

I was inspired by this post at Kindergarten...kindergarten to create these Play Doh Numbers printables. I also found the cutest font called Smiley Monster here. I let my three year-old work on these printables and she did well with the snakes and balls and working on one-to-one correspondence.

Pumpkin Number Line

I use this number line with my students to practice sequencing the numbers from 0-10. We color the pumpkins and the kids glue them in order on a sentence strip. It's great practice and the kids like taking them home. I have included a color copy, as well as, a black and white copy.

Apple Number Flip Book

I had so much fun I think I'm going to make all kinds of fall flip books. Here's one with apples!

My Apple Number Flip Book

Pumpkin Numbers Flip Book

I had fun creating this book today while my kids were in special classes. I plan to print the book on cardstock and then cut all but the pages in half, except the back page. I will then make sure the numbers and pumpkins are out of numerical order and bind the left side of the book (numbers) and bind the right side of the book (pumpkins). I will try to take a picture and add it later. For now, here is the printable if you'd like to use it.

Apple Counting 1-10

Use red washable ink pads to let the students make a fingerprint apple that corresponds with the number of apples at the bottom of the page. Be sure to have them write the number of apples in the blank.
