A cuss word in 'spinach'? That's a first!

A little scenario about potty mouth after lunch that took place between an accuser, the accused and myself in the hallway. It made me giggle!

Me to the accuser: "What word did Johnny* say?"
Accuser: "I don't know. A big kid told me that was in the bathroom."
Me: "What word did you say, Johnny*?"
Accused: "It was in 'spinach'."
Me: "It was in spinach?"
Accused: "Yes, it was in 'spinach'."
Me: "Do you mean Spanish, Johnny?"
Accused: "Yes, Spanish."
Me: "We don't say inappropriate words at school. It doesn't matter what language."

So, I left the conversation covering my face because I was about to crack up. Until....the accuser comes up to me in the hall about 10 minutes later and said, "I think he said Mother *&!@er." WHAT???? How do 5 year-olds even know that's a bad word? Also, I'm pretty sure that since the accuser wasn't in the bathroom with the accused, he probably didn't really know what was said. Who knows though? Obviously we had a discussion, but I'm not sure it did any good.

How do you handle potty mouth in Kindergarten?

  1. OMG!!!!! Some of the things they say is shocking!!! The first time they say a naughty word I give them a warning because I try to judge if they even know what they are saying. Then if they say it a second time, then I discipline them accordingly... oh little ones...

    1. I know! Some of the things are definitely shocking. :) I kind of do the same thing as you with a warning first and then a consequence if it happens again.

  3. Very rarely do I hear the actual word being said, so if I do that is a different story (although it is usally as simple as letting them know that is a swear word and it is not allowed in school) sometimes kinders don't know!!!

For all the he said she saids my answer is simple "If you know it is a bad word, do me a favor and never ever say it. If I hear it out of someone's mouth I will speak to that person." Nips it in the bud 99% of the time. And most of the time it is fart or stupid. :)

I may just blog about this myself. :)

  4. Funny story and sad at the same time! Hate to hear language like that come from their sweet mouths.

  5. I usually do like you and ask what the word was because half the time it isn't really bad. They think some words are bad and I just say "that isn't a nice word and you shouldn't use it, but it's not bad" and if it is bad I tell them we don't say those words at school or you will be punished the next time. I always get the "MY DAD SAYS IT" and I just say big people shouldn't say those words either because they hurt people and they aren't nice words and we talk about bucket filler words.

  6. I will usually give a warning the first time, because some times little ones don't realize that it is a bad word they are saying but just repeating what they hear at home or whatever. I always discipline the second time. I will tell them the first time that if I hear the word again we will have consequences. So that they learn the word is not a good word to be using.
